Two valid answers to different questions
The effective all-in rate answers: how much did this entire bill cost for each kWh used? The marginal tariff rate answers: what energy charge changes when one more kWh is used or saved? Confusing them can overstate appliance savings because a fixed daily charge does not disappear when a lamp is switched off.
When the all-in rate helps
Use it to compare the overall burden of similar billing periods, after removing arrears, deposits and unrelated one-off lines. It is also useful for a household budget when the goal is to reproduce a complete historical period rather than isolate one appliance.
When the tariff rate helps
Use the applicable unit rate for appliance, EV, heating or solar self-consumption questions. For tiered or time-of-use plans, the correct marginal rate may depend on the consumption block and time. There may be more than one valid scenario, so show the rate used rather than hiding it.
- Flat rate: one energy rate for the period
- Tiered rate: the next kWh may enter a different block
- Time-of-use: the time of the change determines the rate
A transparent result
Record the bill period, total kWh, fixed charges removed, currency and tariff document date. A result with a visible input trail is more useful than a precise-looking number whose rate cannot be traced.
Worked example: appliance saving

- Energy rate 0.25/kWh
- Appliance saving 60 kWh/month

- All-in shortcut would show 18.00
- Energy-rate method shows 15.00
- The 3.00 difference belongs to charges that may not change with use
