How to read a BEE AC energy label
Find the model-specific energy information on a BEE label and use it without turning star rating into an invented universal running cost.
Match the exact model
Confirm the label belongs to the same model number and capacity as the appliance. Similar-looking models can have different electrical values.
Prefer published annual energy information
When annual energy consumption is available for the model, use it as a labelled test-condition reference. Actual use can differ with climate, room and behaviour.
Use stars for comparison, not a fixed saving claim
Compare the published energy value and label period for the models being considered. A star count alone is not enough to calculate your bill.
Read the identification first
Start with brand, model number, appliance type, rated capacity and label period. A screenshot from a retailer or a similar model name is not enough when the suffix or capacity differs. Matching the exact unit prevents an annual energy figure from one model being used to calculate the cost of another.
Separate capacity, efficiency and energy
Cooling capacity describes the cooling task. Efficiency metrics compare useful cooling with electrical input under the label method. Annual energy consumption is a model-specific test-based energy figure. Star rating summarises performance within the applicable label framework and period; it is not a universal percentage reduction that can be multiplied into every home bill.
Use annual energy as a labelled scenario
If a label lists 800 kWh annual energy consumption, an even monthly average would be 800 ÷ 12 = 66.67 kWh. At an illustrative ₹8 per unit, that is an energy-charge scenario of about ₹533.36 per month. Actual monthly use is seasonal and may differ; ₹8 is an entered example, not a published tariff.

Compare labels from compatible periods
Efficiency thresholds and label presentation can change. Check that the models are comparable in type, capacity and label period, and use the current official BEE information. Do not describe an expired or unmatched label as the current rating for a product.
Why home use can differ
The label provides a controlled comparison basis. Weather, room heat gain, installation, thermostat, occupancy, maintenance and hours can change real consumption. Use a meter or several bills for observed household energy, while keeping account identifiers private.
Label-reading checklist
Save the complete label or official record with the model number, appliance type, capacity, label period, star level, efficiency metric and annual energy information that it actually shows. Note whether the value comes from the label, a product sheet or your own measurement. When sharing a cost calculation, show the energy figure and entered rate rather than turning the star count into an unsupported saving claim.
