Read energy charges, fixed charges and other bill lines without treating a planning calculator as a replacement for your distribution company bill.
Energy charge
This usually follows units used in the billing period. The rate can vary by slab, category, state or tariff order, so read the current bill and official tariff for your connection.
Other lines affect payable amount
Bills may include fixed charges, fuel adjustments, duties, taxes, arrears, subsidies, meter-related charges or rounding. Names and rules depend on the distributor and tariff order.
Use the calculator for the visible part
Calculate appliance units and an energy-charge estimate with your own rate. Then compare several real bills and list recurring non-energy lines separately.
A simple bill-reading example
Assume the bill shows 180 kWh and you enter an illustrative ₹8 per kWh for a single-rate energy scenario. The energy component is 180 × ₹8 = ₹1,440. If the payable amount is ₹1,690, the remaining ₹250 must be explained by the actual fixed, duty, adjustment, arrears, subsidy, tax or other lines on that bill. The example does not claim ₹8 or ₹250 is a current tariff anywhere.
Build a line-by-line reconciliation
Copy each printed line into one of four groups: units and energy charges, recurring connection charges, period-specific adjustments, and account-specific credits or arrears. Keep tax and duty labels as written. The groups help explain a bill but do not replace the distributor’s definitions or current tariff order.

Check dates and meter status
Confirm the previous and current reading dates, number of days, meter-reading status and whether the reading is actual or estimated. A longer billing period can raise both units and slab effects. If the bill corrects an earlier estimate, comparing only the current month with an appliance calculator can be misleading.
When to contact the distributor
Use the official complaint or clarification process when the meter number, reading, connection category, tariff line, payment history or account information appears wrong. Do not post an unredacted bill publicly. GharGanit can explain arithmetic and accept a formula correction, but it cannot access or decide an electricity account dispute.
Monthly comparison worksheet
For each month, record billing dates, days, opening and closing readings, billed units, meter status, energy-charge lines, recurring charges, adjustments and payable amount. Compare similar seasons and occupancy instead of reading one high bill in isolation. If a correction or subsidy appears, keep it separate from appliance energy use. This structure helps you ask a precise question without sharing account numbers or personal details.
