Calculate the AC energy before pricing it
Find electrical input power from the exact air-conditioner label or monitoring record. Cooling capacity in tons or BTU/h is not the same as electrical input. Multiply input kilowatts by operating hours and a measured or explicitly tested operating factor to estimate kWh.
For variable-speed equipment, a plug or circuit energy record over representative hot days is usually more useful than assuming the compressor draws nameplate power continuously.
Add the energy to the existing billing month
A progressive slab calculation depends on the household's total monthly electricity, not the AC in isolation. Begin with the expected non-AC consumption, then add the AC kWh. The added units may sit partly in one slab and partly in the next.
Use the same billing period and account type as the DEWA bill. Water consumption is a separate input in the combined calculator and should not be inferred from cooling use.
Keep rates and surcharge current
Enter slab rates and the fuel surcharge from DEWA's current official pages. Do not copy an old screenshot or treat an example rate as permanent. Other bill lines, municipality-related charges, VAT or account adjustments may mean the calculator does not reproduce the final invoice exactly.
- Verify account category.
- Verify total kWh and billing dates.
- Keep fuel surcharge separate from the base slab rate.
Compare changes with the same comfort target
To test a thermostat, schedule or replacement unit, hold room, occupancy and comfort assumptions as consistent as possible. Compare measured kWh across similar weather or use a labelled scenario range. A lower daily runtime on a mild week is not proof of an equipment saving.
The result is a bill-planning scenario, not a diagnosis of an AC system. Maintenance, sizing and electrical work require qualified local professionals.
Worked example: extra cooling energy
Inputs
- Existing monthly electricity: 900 kWh
- AC input: 1.5 kW
- Illustrative equivalent runtime: 4 hours/day for 30 days
- Current DEWA slab rates and surcharge to be entered by the user
Working
- AC energy = 1.5 × 4 × 30 = 180 kWh
- New household total = 900 + 180 = 1,080 kWh
- Allocate the 1,080 kWh across the current entered slabs, then compare with the original 900 kWh scenario
